The Hidden Subject

Education is often understood as the acquisition of knowledge.

The focus is on what children learn - the goal is subject mastery.

What’s hidden is the critical core subject: The Child.

How children connect with their learning matters as much as subject mastery.  Meaningful and relevant learning bridges intellect and emotion. Brings learning to life.

The hidden subject of education also refers to the emotional needs that shape a child's behavior.

Emotional wellness is the foundation of learning.  Children who feel good about themselves (healthy self-esteem) and regulate their feelings (emotional intelligence) are more likely to succeed academically.

We as educators have a responsibility to (1) understand the emotional needs of each child (2) build positive relationships (3) support children through emotionally challenging moments.

This is the heart of education.

The 4 Elements of Education (4Ws)

WHO?  This is a child or group of children. Their values, needs, abilities, talents, and interests.

WHO is like the element of FIRE. Curiosity and motivation.

WHAT?  This is the curriculum. The values, perspectives, concepts, skills, and behaviors we want children to learn.

WHAT is like the element of EARTH. Subject matter.

WAY?  This is how we teach - the process of learning. The teaching methods we choose create an engaging learning experience.

WAY is like the element of WATER. Movement and flow.

WHY?  This is the purpose behind learning and the decisions we make. We need to be intentional about WHO we teach, WHAT we teach, and the WAY we teach.

WHY is like the element of AIR. Invisible and essential.

As educators and schools we need to consider all four elements to create an exemplary learning experience.
